Why does the fruit shell sometimes look cracked or broken?

After drying, the Tamarillo shell naturally wrinkles and becomes more brittle. Minor cracks or small breaks can happen during shipping. This is normal and won’t affect brewing or drinking quality.

Why do some pods look more “filled” with tea than others?

Each piece is filled and secured during production, but during drying, packing, and shipping, a small amount of tea may break or shed due to compression. Once dried, the surface is no longer sticky, so the tea can’t be re-filled into the shell—making some pieces look less full. Also, fruit shells vary greatly in size. We don’t rely on a fixed volume—every pack is weighed to ensure it meets the labeled net weight, so please refer to the net weight for consistency.

How to brew

Amount: 1 piece per cup
Teaware: Glass cup / glass teapot / gaiwan
Water temperature: 80–85°C (176–185°F) (best balance of vitamin C retention and taste; higher temperatures may reduce vitamin C)
Water amount: About 350–400 ml per piece
Steep: 3–5 minutes (adjust to taste; longer steeping gives a stronger cup)
Recommended: Enjoy it hot for the smoothest, most balanced flavor.
Serving ideas: Optional—add a small amount of honey or sugar (start minimal so it doesn’t cover the tea). For iced tea, brew hot first to fully open the fruit, then chill and serve cold.

Tamarillo (tree tomato)

Made with Tamarillo grown in the mountain areas of Southwest Yunnan, also called “tree tomato” or “champagne fruit”. The small egg-shaped fruit grows on 2–3 m tall trees and looks a bit like a cherry tomato, but the flavor is completely different – bright acidity with an intense fruity aroma.

In Yunnan, some local communities (such as the Dai and Wa peoples) often use tamarillo in sour soups or cooked into sauces to add a vivid sour note to dishes. For this tea, only the fruit shell is kept: it is hollowed out, gently dried and then filled with tea leaves, turning it into a little fruit pod.

Yunnan black tea

Inside each fruit shell is black tea from the highland regions of Yunnan. It brews a clear orange-red liquor with malty notes and a hint of honeyed sweetness. Combined with Tamarillo, the black tea adds body and warmth, so that the bright sour fruit character feels more layered and rounded.
